globalFEST (gF) began in NYC in 2003 as a creatively curated bright spot for global music lovers in the dark days of early January. Over its first decade, gF’s groundbreaking annual 3 stage, 12 band showcase/festival has become one of the most catalytic world music events in North America, coinciding with the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP’s) annual conference. The premier gateway for emerging and established artists, gF has provided more than one hundred and twenty groups- from around the world and from our own backyard- access to stages across the continent.
globalFEST is also a party, turning winter doldrums into a multi-continent romp at one of downtown New York’s most historic venues. The festival spotlights artists who represent diverse global styles, from traditional and folk to hybrid acts that incorporate classical, rock, jazz, electronic dance music and hip-hop influences.
In 2010, globalFEST became and independent non-profit organization, and in 2012 it received 501c3 status. gF is evolving into a year-round service organization for cultural curators, global music artists, and the live music industry. It administers the gF Touring Fund, curates year-round stages at major music festivals across the country and around the world, provides informal technical assistance to artists interested in expanding their presences in the performing arts field, and encourages cultural diplomacy and cultural understanding.
globalFEST’s mission is cultural, social and political. It aims to bring down boundaries between countries and create cultural opportunities for individual artists and for governments, sponsors, scholars and critics to collaborate. Tours and cultural exchanges that result from globalFEST¹s showcases have helped to build an ever widening audience for world music and, by extension an increase in international cooperation and collaboration.
